Segundo notícia do Público (aqui), os impostos em Portugal representaram 35,3% do PIB em 2005, em 1995 eram de 31,9%. O jornal podia ter ido um pouco mais longe, demonstrava o que aconteceu nos 10 anos, a nível da U.E., onde os países que entrar em 2004, tinham cargas fiscais bem superiores a Portugal em 1995 (em percentagem do PIB), agora em geral têm percentagens menores, devido sobretudo a dois motivos. Em primeiro lugar, houve um ajustamento progressivo em baixa das cargas fiscais, especialmente aquelas que incidem sobre as empresas de forma a que, no período anterior à adesão, altura em que já competiam por investimento estrangeiro, pudessem lutar pela atracção desse mesmo investimento. Em segundo lugar, o crescimento económico destes países ajudou ao peso relativo ainda menor da carga fiscal no PIB dos países.
